Unlocking the Power of Glutathione
In this blog, Dr. Gina Nick, a renowned naturopathic physician and expert in autoimmune health, shares the role of glutathione in our bodies, its delivery systems, and how it supports overall health.
Glutathione and Its Balancing Act
Glutathione is a combination of three amino acids: glutamic acid, glycine, and cysteine, forming a tripeptide found in every cell. It acts as a powerful antioxidant that aids in detoxification and helps the body neutralize toxins. It also helps lower inflammation in the body and brain to prevent and mitigate various health challenges.
This potent molecule is naturally produced in our bodies and found in food, but it’s often insufficient to counterbalance daily toxins from pollutants, stress, and dietary indiscretions. Therefore, supplementing is recommended to help our bodies produce the optimal amount of glutathione necessary.
Delivery Systems for Glutathione Supplementation
Traditionally, glutathione was primarily administered via injections for fast absorption due to its unstable nature. While liposomal glutathione improved effectiveness, it encountered taste and user compliance challenges. As a result, alternative methods like IV administration and oral options such as Pixie Sticks were considered to overcome these issues.
Health Benefits of Glutathione IV
The effectiveness of using IV for glutathione delivery is debatable for a few reasons, including its size, doses, and short lifespan.
- Size: The size of glutathione as a tripeptide hinders its penetration into crucial cellular structures like cytosol and mitochondria, where it’s most needed.
- Large Doses: IV-administered glutathione often comes in large doses, frequently too much to meet our body’s needs. Since our bodies tightly regulate glutathione levels, most IV-administered glutathione is excreted, rendering it wasteful.
- Short Lifespan: The effectiveness of IV-administered glutathione doesn’t provide full benefits because it only lasts between 48 to 72 hours.
Oral Glutathione Pixie Sticks
Pixie Sticks is a clinically researched oral form of glutathione that effectively boosts blood levels. It is formulated with glycine, a calming peptide that supports detoxification and eliminates discomfort and unpleasant taste. It is also made to be stable and has a longer shelf life, so patients can get the maximum benefits of glutathione without waste.
Glutathione in Fertility
Glutathione is beneficial for both men and women facing fertility challenges because it helps in enhancing sperm quality and safeguarding the ovaries and uterus, which is vital in conception. Additionally, it supports liver function, which is essential for hormone regulation through metabolism and elimination.
This detoxification support can be beneficial before and during pregnancy, potentially alleviating issues such as morning sickness. Dr. Nick emphasized that women take physiological doses throughout the pregnancy to keep things balanced, supporting healthy development and minimizing oxidative stress.
