The Preconception Plan: Holistic Integrative Fertility Support That Improves IVF Outcomes

March 21, 20265 min read

Fertility care does not have to be either conventional medicine or restorative reproductive medicine.

It can be both.

In this special episode of HealthYouniversity, Dr. Susan Fox introduces the HealthYouniversity Group, a public charity designed to make the Preconception Plan at Health Youniversity more accessible. Health Youniversity Group offers partial scholarship to those for whom the price of this 120-day program may be prohibitive. You can be part of this initiative to help others realize their dream of family.

This conversation also reframes fertility care as collaborative rather than competitive, and speaks directly to the recent shift in tone around true integrative fertility care.

Why Preconception Health Matters Before IVF

Folliculogenesis — the maturation process of an egg from early potential to ovulation readiness — takes approximately 120 days. That means the health of an egg retrieved during IVF reflects the previous four months of circulation, nutrition, sleep, stress, and metabolic balance.

If we want to improve fertility outcomes, including live birth rates, we must support the body during its entire developmental window.

The Preconception Plan provides structured guidance across the five phases of the four-week menstrual cycle, aligning nutrition, hydration, circulation practices, emotional resilience, and sleep optimization with each hormonal phase.

So whether you’re trying to conceive naturally, undergoing IVF or egg freezing, this applies to you.

Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation (TEAS) and Fertility Outcomes

A cornerstone of the Preconception Plan is targeted circulation through Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation (TEAS).

TEAS uses gentle electrical stimulation at specific acupuncture points to improve blood flow and regulate reproductive physiology. Meta-analyses involving more than 2,000 women have shown that TEAS improved live birth rates by 42% in women over 35 undergoing frozen embryo transfer.

Women over 35 commonly have what’s called diminished ovarian reserve which require assisted reproductive technologies, especially if more than one child is desired. Supporting uterine and ovarian blood flow, improving nutrient-dense circulation, and reducing inflammatory stress may significantly influence embryo implantation and pregnancy success.

TEAS is one example of how integrative medicine and conventional IVF can work together rather than compete.

A Whole-Body Fertility Program Designed for Real Life

The Preconception Plan is built for women who are already balancing full lives. The program is largely self-paced, designed for women who cannot add another weekly appointment or membership to their calendar. Sessions can be completed at home, at times that fit into an already demanding schedule.

This flexibility matters. Fertility treatment often coincides with peak professional and personal responsibilities. Integrative support must be accessible.

The course includes modules for:

  • Nutrition and hydration aligned with cycle phase

  • Circulation practices using Qigong

  • Targeted acupoint stimulation using Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation (TEAS)

  • Circadian rhythm regulation with sleep/wake support

  • Guided imagery using binaural beats to retrain stress response patterns

Emotional Health and Stress Resilience in Fertility Care

Reproductive health does not exist independently from emotional health.

Chronic stress, disrupted sleep, and heightened cortisol influence inflammatory pathways, blood flow, and hormonal balance. The Preconception Plan incorporates guided imagery and binaural beat practices specifically to retrain the brain away from habitual stress reactivity and toward resilience.

This is not abstract. Neuroendocrine balance directly affects ovarian function, uterine receptivity, and implantation potential.

When emotional health improves, physiologic regulation improves.

Restorative Reproductive Medicine and IVF: A “Both-And” Approach

In the past year, public discourse has framed restorative reproductive medicine and IVF as opposing approaches. That is simply inaccurate.

Integrative fertility care does not reject IVF. IVF can be a necessary medical intervention. For some patients, immediate IVF or egg retrieval is appropriate. For others, egg freezing may be time-sensitive.

Integrative holistic medicine supports a successful IVF or egg freezing cycle. If time allows, preparing the body during the 120-day folliculogenesis window improves whole health, including reproductive health before undergoing IVF. If time does not allow, implementing integrative holistic practices concurrent to a cycles can also improve outcomes.

The message is clear: collaborative care benefits patients.

HealthYouniversity Group: Making Fertility Support Accessible

One in five individuals experiences fertility challenges.

The HealthYouniversity Group is a public charitable organization created to provide scholarships that offset the cost of the Preconception Plan course. Donations directly support individuals who may not otherwise be able to access integrative fertility care.

For potential donors, contributions help someone move closer to building their family. Truly offering the gift of life.

For those seeking support, a brief fertility assessment call ensures the program is appropriate. Certain conditions may indicate the program is not right for you, or needs to be adapted. Thoughtful screening is part of responsible care.

The Future of Fertility Is Integrative

Fertility medicine continues to advance technologically. At the same time, patients increasingly recognize the importance of whole-body health.

Improving circulation to ovaries and uterus.
Enhancing health through nutrition.
Improving detoxification and restoration through sleep.
Strengthening stress resilience.
Supporting uterine and ovarian blood flow.

These are not alternative concepts. They are physiologic foundations.

I am a women’s health expert with a specialty in working with women and couples navigating fertility challenges for more than 20 years. I look forward to helping you realize your dream of family. I’m also a mother, a sister, a friend. I live in beautiful Northern California, where the nature of Mt. Tamalpais, the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay are my backyard.

Traditional Chinese Medicine discovered me in 1978, when I was struggling with digestive complaints that flummoxed medical doctors. It wasn’t until I received my first acupuncture treatment and herbal prescription that I connected my medical condition to grief over loss of a loved one; that the stress of holding in such huge emotions was literally tying me up in knots, and I was finally able to heal.

Discovering the powerful links between the physical, the mental, the emotional, the spiritual, and the environmental shifted my understanding of health and wellness forever.

For more than 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of learning and implementing Whole Systems Traditional Chinese Medicine to understand the root causes of health conditions and realize optimal health and well-being.

I am a strong believer in the importance of health education, for knowledge is power when you have the tools for effective self care.
