Achieving optimal health requires more than just following protocols and taking medications. It’s about identifying the root causes of imbalances and making intentional changes that lead to lasting well-being.

This week at Health Youniversity, I chatted with Adriana Schuman, a functional medicine strategist with over 15 years health coaching experience.  By addressing the underlying causes of wellness challenges, including impaired gut health, she encourages people to make better informed choices that lead to vibrant reproductive health.

Building the Foundation for Your Fertile Health

Your Fertile Health goes beyond symptom management to understand and address the factors that influence fertility, including environment, nutrition, sleep, and movement. By creating a balanced foundation through these key areas, individuals can enhance their well-being and support their fertility journey.

The Four Pillars of Fertile Wellness

Achieving holistic wellness requires understanding the fundamental aspects that influence overall health. These aspects can be structured around four foundational pillars:

  1. Environment: A supportive environment, both internally and externally, is essential for reproductive wellness. Internal factors include chronic stress, unresolved trauma, and negative thoughts, which can disrupt hormonal balance and impact fertility. Externally, environmental toxins such as microplastics, synthetic fragrances, and pollutants can affect reproductive health. Adriana emphasizes the importance of minimizing exposure to harmful substances and creating a toxin-free space, both at home and in daily routines.

  2. Food: Nutrition plays a vital role in supporting fertility and overall wellness. Adriana highlights the importance of consuming whole, unprocessed foods that nourish the body and balance hormones. A diet rich in fresh vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats supports gut health and provides the necessary building blocks for hormone production. Reduce inflammation with real food - organic and pesticide-free plants, hormone-free meats, and wild-caught fish lower in mercury.

  3. Sleep: Sleep is an active and essential process for reproductive health. Adriana underscores that quality sleep helps the body detoxify, regulate hormones, and repair cellular functions. Establish a consistent sleep routine, reduce blue light exposure before bed, and create a calming sleep environment to support the body’s natural detox and remodeling  processes.

  4. Movement: Keep active and engaged throughout the day with natural, enjoyable movements like walking, gentle stretching, and yoga. Movement improves circulation, supports metabolic health, and helps maintain hormonal balance. Addressing Infertility Holistically

Infertility can be a challenging and complex journey, but understanding the underlying factors can make a significant difference. Symptoms are not setbacks but are important signals to guide you to which areas need support.

Here are the key areas to consider:

  • Manage Stress: High stress level disrupt the hormonal balance crucial for fertility. Techniques like mindfulness, emotional processing, and stress reduction practices can support hormonal health.

  • Reduce Environmental Toxins: Exposure to harmful substances like microplastics and synthetic fragrances negatively impact reproductive health. Minimize contact with these toxins and create a clean, supportive environment to best prepare for pregnancy.

  • Optimize Nutrition: Whole, unprocessed foods improve gut microbiome to support hormonal balance and reduce inflammation. Nutrient-dense meals rich in vegetables, proteins, and healthy fats can improve reproductive wellness.

  • Prioritize Sleep: Quality sleep is essential for hormone regulation and overall well-being. Establish a calming bedtime routine and minimize blue light exposure before sleep to maintain hormonal balance.

I am a women’s health expert with a specialty in working with women and couples navigating fertility challenges for more than 20 years. I look forward to helping you realize your dream of family. I’m also a mother, a sister, a friend. I live in beautiful Northern California, where the nature of Mt. Tamalpais, the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay are my backyard.

Traditional Chinese Medicine discovered me in 1978, when I was struggling with digestive complaints that flummoxed medical doctors. It wasn’t until I received my first acupuncture treatment and herbal prescription that I connected my medical condition to grief over loss of a loved one; that the stress of holding in such huge emotions was literally tying me up in knots, and I was finally able to heal.

Discovering the powerful links between the physical, the mental, the emotional, the spiritual, and the environmental shifted my understanding of health and wellness forever.

For more than 20 years, I’ve had the privilege of learning and implementing Whole Systems Traditional Chinese Medicine to understand the root causes of health conditions and realize optimal health and well-being.

I am a strong believer in the importance of health education, for knowledge is power when you have the tools for effective self care.
